A DRAG QUEEN'S DRESSING ROOM IN 80S NEW YORK

a drag queen’s dressing room in 80s new york
Individual project, July 2022
This project is about the reproduction of a dressing room of a drag queen in the New York of the1980s.
This project gave me the possibility to explore a new field of interior design, scenography: the thinking process behind it, with the research and the analysis needed, and the resulting production of the scene, made me broaden my interests and skills regarding this field. Thanks to this project I could challenge myself.

View 1: The first view shows the final interior, where it’s easily noticeable the chaos
of a behind-the-scenes dressing room.
This is shown by make-up, accessories, wigs and shoes all scattered to the ground,
the cigarette laying on the floor, making the ambience foggy.
Adding to the overall environment, the use of light is especially studied,
to recall of how these dressing rooms were: mainly located underground,
far from the bright city center, and because drag queens mostly couldn’t afford
powerful lights to brighten up the space.

View 2: This view is a close-up on the left side of the room,
where we can notice the distressed walls and flooring, and the chaos around them.

View 3: Here, the viewer is met with the state of the furniture,
which was scratched, distressed, and worn out most of the times.
All these furnitures were cheap, sometimes even found on the street,
which is the reason why the place looks uncoordinated and unbalanced.
The only element that lights up the space is the mirror of the vanity,
where the state of some lightbulbs is also shown, as they are not working anymore.
